The week we headed to Armenia (while watching the Super Bowl). We couldn't find anything referring to a national dish other than repeated references to Lavash (a traditional flatbread). Since bread on it's own doesn't really constitute a meal, we added in another frequently mentioned dish - Dolmas. A dolma is really any meat and grain stuffed vegetable, but the traditional winter version is essentially a cabbage roll. Apparently there is even an Armenia festival dedicated to the lowly cabbage roll!
While we ate Ruth filled us in on what she learned about Armenia today. Yerevan is the world's oldest city (founded 29 years before Rome), learning chess is still mandatory in school, and the Duduk is an ancient flute-like instrument made of the wood from an apricot tree (and is UNESCO designated Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage).
The Dolmas were pretty good, the Lavash was not great. And the whole meal was far more effortful than expected (it took forever to get the stupid leaves off the cabbage!)
Australia next week - the leg of lamb is already ordered!
