#5 - Angola

This week we’ve expanded our learning beyond food in an effort to understand how we can make informed choices about the foods we eat. Seems pretty heavy, but it was Jack who discovered the link this week. We found that Muamba de Galinha is the national dish of Angola. It’s basically a chicken stew and one of the main ingredients is palm oil. While doing his research Jack came upon this commercial which was created by a grocery store chain and was banned for being “too political” in the UK. I’m sure many of you have seen it.

Palm oil isn‘t readily available in Victoria, so the decision to make a more ethical food choice was easy for us in this case. Canadian canola oil made a perfect substitute .

Back to the meal. It received mixed reviews. Ruth and I liked it, but Andrew found it bland. Jack gave it 6/10 but this was based largely on his dislike for tomatos and squash. Given Angola’s history as a Portuguese colony, I wonder how much of the Eurpean influence was in this “traditional African” meal.
